It is absolutely amazing how the selfie trend evolved so rapidly in only a few years. The expansion of social networks has facilitated this process and uploading photos all day long has become the norm. It is nearly impossible to log on your Facebook or Twitter account and not be literally bombarded with selfies.
What started as an entertaining activity that one would perform from time to time, especially on holidays, has turned into a world-wide addiction. Everywhere they go people take pictures of themselves from different angles and post them online. Some individuals might see nothing wrong with it, but let’s take a closer look at the harm that you could inflict on yourself and on others when oversharing selfies online.
Deaths caused by selfies
I just want to point out how far some are willing to go in order to shoot a more interesting picture. A lot of people have been killed by their own ignorance and the figures are still rising. It is unbelievable in what circumstances reckless selfie takers have died: some fell from bridges or cliffs, some were involved in car crashes while others shot themselves in the head accidentally or got bitten by rattlesnakes.
A fascinating fact is that last year the number of people killed in shark attacks is smaller compared to those who lost their lives trying to shoot an intriguing selfie.
It becomes addictive
In most civilized countries a large portion of the population owns a smartphone. A recent survey indicates that an enormous percentage of adolescents post pictures online, which in some cases can turn into an obsession.
For instance, Danny Bowman has tried to commit suicide after striving to take the “perfect” selfie. In order to achieve perfection he was spending up to half a day taking self-portrait photographs continuously. During that period of time his life has changed entirely: he dropped out of high-school, he lost a lot of weight and he attempted to take his own life after not being able to achieve what he aimed for.
Obviously, this is an extreme example of obsessive compulsive disorder and technology addiction, but less severe cases were reported as well.
Real life relationships are at risk
Individuals who become addicted to social media tend to neglect their real life passions and soon become zombies who are no longer able to appreciate the world around them. Human interaction has become increasingly hard, especially for teens. Most of them experience shyness and anxiety when put in social situations because they are not satisfied with their appearance.
Too much emphasis is being put on exterior beauty since this global madness has started. We stop appreciating the people around us for what they are and we become more introverted. Psychiatrists indicate that the number of cases of narcissism and body dysmorphic disorder have peaked since selfies became so popular.
Let’s analyze a very interesting example that illustrates how self-worth shrinks due to oversharing on social media platforms. When someone posts a picture of himself that doesn’t receive enough attention (likes, comments or both) he soon starts to brood over it, which usually leads to self-image crisis. Eventually the pictures that do not receive the expected appreciation are deleted.
Therefore, don’t let yourself trapped by what’s presented on TV. Hours of gym, plastic surgeries and cosmetics were required in order to make celebrities look like they do. Instead, you should focus on what really matters in life: true friendship, love, family, career and basically everything that makes you happy. It’s your choice: you even opt to live a fearful life or you can choose the other alternative – a happy and rewarding living.
